Earthquake

On July 30, 2025, an earthquake of 8.8 magnitude struck the eastern coast of Kamchatka, Russia. According to Indian time, the earthquake occurred at 4:54 am.

This news has sent shivers across the world. This earthquake was so strong that its tremors were felt from America to Japan. Due to this powerful earthquake, high tsunami waves were also seen rising in the coastal areas of Russia.

People in the areas adjacent to the coast have been asked to immediately move to higher places. 20 lakh people have also been shifted to safe places. After this earthquake, a warning of sea storm i.e. tsunami has been issued from America to Japan.

The world’s first earthquake Earthquake is a very dangerous natural disaster which has so far caused heavy devastation all over the world.

The biggest earthquake ever recorded occurred in Chile’s Biobío region in 1960 with a magnitude of 9.5. It is also known as the Valdivia earthquake or the Great Chilean earthquake in which About 1,655 people lost their lives in this terrible earthquake and about 2 million people lost their homes.

Earlier in 1952, an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 was recorded in the Kamchatka region of Russia. This was the largest recorded earthquake at that time. The tsunami that followed this earthquake caused heavy damage in the Hawaiian Islands, destroying property worth about one million dollars.

After this, another devastating earthquake of magnitude 9.1 occurred in the Toho region of Japan in 2011. This earthquake and the one that followed are the

World’s most dangerous earthquakes:

  1. Great Chilean earthquake – 9.5 in 1950
  2. Great Alaska USA – 9.2 in 1964
  3. Kamchatka Krai, Russia – 9.0 in 1952
  4. Sumatra ,Indonesia : 9.1 in 2004
  5. Biobio, Chile – 8.8, 2010

Safety Measure :

The key earthquake safety measures as of 2025 focus on preparedness, mitigation, and response both at individual and community levels. These include:

  1. Before an Earthquake:
    • Secure heavy furniture and objects to walls to prevent tipping.
    • Identify safe spots such as under sturdy tables or against inside walls.
    • Prepare an emergency supply kit with water, non-perishable food, first aid items, flashlights, batteries, and essential medications.
    • Develop and practice family and workplace evacuation plans.
    • Inspect and retrofit buildings to improve earthquake resistance, especially older construction.
    • Avoid hanging heavy items over beds or seating areas.
    • Install reliable communication plans to notify family and emergency contacts.
  2. During an Earthquake:
    • Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Get down, take cover under sturdy furniture or against an interior wall, protect your head and neck, and hold on until shaking stops.
    • If in bed, stay in bed and protect your head with a pillow unless under a heavy fixture.
    • Stay indoors until shaking stops; avoid doorways, windows, outside walls, or anything that could fall.
    • Do not use elevators; use stairs if evacuation is necessary after shaking stops.
  3. After an Earthquake:
    • Be ready for aftershocks.
    • Provide first aid to injured persons and seek medical assistance.
    • Turn off gas, water, and electrical appliances to prevent fires, flooding, or gas leaks if safe.
    • Avoid damaged buildings until they are declared safe.
    • Follow emergency notifications and stay informed through official channels.
  4. Community and Structural Measures:
    • Implementation of earthquake-resistant building codes and seismic retrofitting for structures and critical infrastructure.
    • Expansion of seismic observatories and early warning systems like India’s BhooKamp app for real-time alerts.
    • Regular earthquake drills and public awareness campaigns.
    • Ensuring emergency supplies and communication systems in schools, offices, high-rise buildings, and homes.
