Indore is set to launch India’s first green waste processing plant under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model . This initiative aims to revolutionize the city’s waste management system by converting green waste into valuable resources .

Key aspects of the project:

  • Objective: To efficiently manage green waste, promote environmental sustainability, generate revenue for the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), control the Air Quality Index (AQI), and contribute to a cleaner environment .
  • Process: The plant will process approximately 30 tons of green waste daily, which can increase to 60-70 tons during autumn . This waste, including wood, branches, leaves, and flowers, will be dried to reduce moisture content by 90% and then processed into fine sawdust using cutting-edge machinery .
  • Products: The sawdust will be used to create eco-friendly fuel, durable packing materials, composite materials for furniture, fertilizers, and biodegradable disposable plates . Wood and branches will be recycled to produce wooden pellets, serving as an alternative to coal and promoting energy conservation .
  • Benefits: The IMC will earn approximately Rs 3,000 per tonne in royalty for supplying wood and branches to the plant . The use of wooden pellets as an alternative to coal contributes to AQI control . The project aligns with the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban’s vision of Garbage-Free Cities .
  • Responsibilities: The IMC will provide and transport land and green waste to the plant, while a private company will set up the infrastructure, including sheds, electricity, and water facilities, and oversee the plant’s operation .
  • Location: The plant is built on 55,000 square feet of land in Bicholi Hapsi .
  • Other Initiatives: Other private firms have set up Meghdoot and sub-grade plants in Sirpur for processing garden waste like leaves and small twigs. Composting is also carried out in specially designed compost pits within municipal gardens .
