As of July 2025, India has registered a total of 658 Geographical Indication (GI) Tags, with several new products added between April 2024 and March 2025. The GI tags encompass a range of items including handicrafts, agricultural products, manufactured goods, and foodstuffs….

Key Highlights of Reports :

  • During ( April 2024–March 2025 ): India added 23 new GI tags during this period. The majority of these were from Uttar Pradesh (8 GIs), Assam (7 GIs), Andaman & Nicobar Islands (5 GIs), and Gujarat (3 GIs).
  • Handicrafts accounted for 65% of new GI registrations, followed by manufactured goods (17%), agricultural products (13%), and foodstuffs (4%).
  •  Uttar Pradesh holds the highest number of GI-tagged products, at 77, surpassing even Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in the latest counts. The Kashi (Varanasi) region alone has 32 GI-tagged products, establishing itself as a major GI hub.

Prelims facts :

  • The GI tag is valid for 10 years and gives exclusive rights to regional producers, helping prevent counterfeit and imitation products.
  • Registration is overseen by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and is guided by WTO’s TRIPS agreement.
