Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, also known as the “Missile Man of India,” was one of the most respected scientists and the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007.
His full name was Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam. Born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, he came from a humble background. Despite facing financial hardships, his determination, hard work, and love for learning shaped his remarkable journey.Dr. Kalam made significant contributions to India’s space and defense programs.
He played a pivotal role in the development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and Agni and Prithvi missiles, which led to India gaining recognition in the field of space technology and defense. Working with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Kalam was the architect of many projects that made India self-reliant in technology.
His dedication and leadership in the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998 made India a nuclear power and brought him national admiration. Apart from his technical achievements, Dr. Kalam was a passionate teacher and a writer.
He authored several books including “Wings of Fire”, “Ignited Minds”, and “India 2020”, which continue to inspire youth across the country.As President, Dr. Kalam was widely called the “People’s President” for his ability to connect with people, especially students. He believed that education and youth empowerment were key in making India a developed nation.
Even after his term as President, he continued to meet and interact with students, encouraging them to dream big and strive for excellence. Dr. Kalam’s life is a testimony to the power of simplicity, integrity, and service. He lived modestly, never married, and devoted his life to science, education, and nation-building.
