The E-Shram Portal is a key initiative by the Government of India. It launched on August 26, 2021, under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

The main goal is to create a National Database of Unorganised Workers (NDUW) linked with Aadhaar. This database helps deliver welfare schemes and social security benefits to India’s large informal workforce.

Who Can Register?
Unorganised workers include daily wage earners, migrant laborers, construction workers, street vendors, gig/platform workers, agricultural laborers, domestic workers, and more.

Eligibility: Workers aged 16 to 59 years, according to the latest guidelines, who are not covered by ESIC/EPFO and do not pay income tax.

Key Features & Benefits
Universal Account Number (UAN): Each registered worker receives a unique UAN for easy identification and access to various schemes.

Social Security & Welfare Schemes: The portal integrates with over 14 central schemes. These include Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, MGNREGA, PM Awas Yojana (Urban and Rural), PM Street Vendor AtmaNirbhar Nidhi, and others.

Accidental Insurance with this Scheme : All registered workers can access ₹2 lakh accidental insurance under PMSBY.

Job Opportunities: Integrations with projects like PM Gati Shakti connect users to job opportunities related to major infrastructure projects.

Financial Inclusion: The portal helps workers outside the formal sector access financial services.

Microsites for States/UTs: These were launched in January 2025 to meet local needs and simplify worker registration and verification.

Platform Worker Coverage: Starting in December 2024, gig and platform companies such as Zomato, Blinkit, Uber, Ola, and Swiggy are officially part of the social security system, allowing gig workers to benefit from these programs.

Registration Statistics (as of August 5, 2025) :
Total Registrations: More than 30.98 crore workers are registered nationwide & Top States are Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra top the list in registrations.

Registeration can be done through :
1) Free Registration: Workers can self-register at www.eshram.gov.in or visit Common Service Centres (CSCs), State Seva Kendras (SSKs), and designated aggregator/employer offices.

2) Mobile Integration: Workers can access the portal through the UMANG mobile app for convenience.
