The India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) 2024 is a new effort by NITI Aayog. Its goal is to evaluate and improve the electrification initiatives of Indian states and union territories.

The index monitors progress in electric mobility by looking at 16 specific performance indicators, which are divided into three main themes

  1. Transport Electrification Progress – measures the adoption and demand for electric vehicles (EVs).
  2. Charging Infrastructure Readiness – evaluates the development and availability of EV charging stations.
  3. EV Research and Innovation Status – tracks research and development, patents, and innovation in the EV sector.

Score cards of States :

  1. The IEMI gives a score from 0 to 100, showing each state’s performance in building a strong e-mobility ecosystem. According to the 2024 rankings, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Chandigarh lead with scores between 65 and 99.
  2. States like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Haryana are in the performer category, scoring between 50 and 64. Others, such as Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Ladakh, and Andhra Pradesh, are in the aspirants category, with scores below 50. This suggests they need focused efforts.

Key highlights from the 2024 report include:

  1. India’s EV penetration rate rose significantly from 0.23% in 2016 to 7.6% in 2024.
  2. India now holds over two-fifths of the global EV market, up from one-fifth in 2020.
  3. To reach the government’s goal of 30% EV penetration by 2030 (EV30@30 campaign), this share must increase by 22% in the next five years.
  4. Major government programs, such as FAME-II and PM Electric Drive Revolution (PM E-DRIVE), have supported growth in EV adoption, manufacturing capacity, and infrastructure.
  5. Challenges include funding issues for electric buses and trucks, underutilization of charging infrastructure, and gaps in data and regulations.
  6. Recommendations suggest clear policy timelines for adopting zero-emission vehicles, expanding Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency standards, promoting city-level EV saturation, creating pooled funds for electric buses and trucks, and encouraging battery leasing models, visit here

The IEMI is an important tool that encourages competition and data-based policy decisions among states. It aims to speed up India’s shift to electric mobility and reduce transport emissions. Please link yourself here to read more national index www.eminentnews.com
