This Scheme Launched in March 2025, the Pashu Aushadhi Initiative is a government program that provides affordable generic veterinary medicines for farmers and animal husbandry communities across India.
It is based on the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJK), which offer generic medicines for humans at low prices.
The Pashu Aushadhi Kendras will:
- Operate through cooperative societies and Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samriddhi Kendras (PMKSK).
- Provide both modern generic medicines and traditional ethnoveterinary formulas approved by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).
- Work to ease financial strain on farmers, stop livestock diseases (like FMD and Brucellosis), and boost animal health and productivity.
Total Budget allocation:
₹75 crore under the revised Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP), part of an overall budget of ₹3,880 crore for 2024-26.
Annouced to celebrate Janaushadhi Diwas on March 7 Every year, is celebrated as Janaushadhi Diwas (“Generic Medicine Day”) across India.
Purpose of celebration : To raise awareness about the benefits and availability of generic medicines, promoting public health and lowering costs for citizens.
The week of March 1–7 is recognized as “Janaushadhi Week” ending with events on March 7 to celebrate the day.
The scheme began under PMBJP (Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana) in 2019, and the annual celebration now highlights affordable and high-quality medicines for everyone.
The theme for 2025 was “Daam Kam – Dawai Uttam” (“Low Price – Best Medicines”).
