The Samudra Manthan scheme announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 15th August 2025, is officially called the National Deep Water Exploration Mission.
It is a key government initiative aimed at exploring oil and gas reserves in India’s oceans. The goal is to improve energy independence and advance science and technology in deep-sea exploration.
Objective of the Samudra Manthan Scheme:
“To explore and use undersea oil and gas resources in India’s maritime zones. This will increase national energy reserves and lower reliance on imports”
Meaning of Name & Reason:
The name “Samudra Manthan” refers to the ancient Indian myth of churning the cosmic ocean. It symbolizes a transformative effort to uncover hidden and valuable resources while facing challenges similar to those in the myth…
PM Modi noted that like the mythological event which produced treasures (Amrita) and challenges (Halahala), this mission aims to responsibly harness wealth beneath the oceans with strong and dedicated leaderships ..
The mission fits into India’s bigger energy strategy amid global instability in fossil fuel supply and price changes , It strengthens India’s role as a leader in oceanic exploration technology , It aids advancements in underwater inspections, maritime security, and ocean knowledge…
Methods & Significance :
- The program will be carried out in a focused and timely way. There will be clear targets and coordination among ministries and agencies to speed up results
- Development of deep-sea exploration technology, including advanced underwater engineering.
- The mission will deploy a manned deep-ocean submersible named MATSYA 6000. It can take three people to a depth of 6 kilometers, making India one of the few nations with this capability.
- The scheme supports India’s goal to be self-sufficient in energy by doubling national reserves by 2032 and tripling production by 2047 through discoveries in marine resources.
- In addition to hydrocarbons, the mission will conduct ocean biodiversity surveys, map mineral resources, and promote ocean literacy & help in Biodiversity and Environmental Research
- The scheme is expected to provide energy security, spark related industrial innovations, and create jobs in marine technology and research.
- The initiative highlights the development of local technology and domestic production of deep-sea exploration tools and equipment and Promote Make in India Initiative …
