About ZooWIN initiative:
- Purpose: The initiative aims to improve healthcare delivery and reduce fatalities from rabies and snakebites by centralizing vaccine data and enhancing coordination among healthcare providers, municipal authorities, and veterinary services .
- Functionality: ZooWIN uses the
eVIN
infrastructure to track vaccine stocks in real time, ensuring timely availability . It also tracks beneficiaries and ensures the timely administration of all doses of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis . - Implementation: The digital portal was developed by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) with technical support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) . The initiative was launched as a pilot program in five states: Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and Puducherry .
- Additional Support: In 2024, NCDC partnered with UNDP to launch a helpline (15400) in the five pilot states to improve access to rabies and snake bite-related information and treatment .
- Expected Outcomes: The ZooWIN platform is expected to centralize information and enhance collaboration among healthcare providers, municipal authorities, and veterinary services . It also helps locate health centers with available stocks and increases public awareness of treatment options .
- Global Impact: According to the UN, rabies claims over 60,000 lives each year, with India accounting for approximately 36% of these deaths . ZooWIN is expected to help in the prevention of this disease .
